A Brand Sent You a Contract. Here’s What to Look At Before You Sign Anything.

Xtopher, April 9, 2026April 10, 2026

Getting a contract from a brand feels official.

Because it is.

Which is exactly why you need to slow down.

And actually read it.

Most creators either:

  • sign immediately because they’re excited
  • or avoid asking questions because it feels intimidating

Both are expensive mistakes.

Deliverables section

This tells you exactly what you’re agreeing to create.

Look for:

  • number of videos
  • format
  • length
  • posting dates
  • approval requirements

Read every line.

If it asks for more than what was discussed…

👉 Flag it immediately

Because contracts override conversations.

Every time.

Payment terms

This is where timing matters.

Look for:

  • when you get paid
  • how you get paid

Common terms:

  • Net 30 → paid 30 days after delivery
  • Net 60 → paid 60 days after delivery

Whenever possible:

👉 Push for Net 15
👉 Or payment upon delivery

Especially with new brands.

Usage rights

This is where creators lose money.

Usage rights mean:

👉 the brand can reuse your content

For example:

  • paid ads
  • website
  • email marketing

If usage rights are included:

👉 Charge more

A simple baseline:

👉 base rate + 50% for usage

Because they’re making money from your content beyond your audience.

Exclusivity clause

This limits who you can work with.

Example:

👉 You cannot promote competing brands

Typical range:

  • 30 days → normal
  • 60 to 90 days → higher cost
  • over 90 days → premium pricing

Because exclusivity blocks other income.

Revision rounds

Watch for this carefully.

Some contracts include:

👉 unlimited revisions

That’s a problem.

Instead:

👉 limit to 2 rounds

Anything beyond that costs more.

What to do if something looks off

Do not ignore it.

Do not sign anyway.

Instead, respond like this:

“Thanks for sending this over.

Before I sign, I want to clarify a few points to make sure we’re aligned.”

Then list your questions clearly.

That’s professional.

Your one action from this post

Save this checklist.

Next time you get a contract:

👉 review each section before responding

Because once you sign…

👉 you’re locked in
