Stop Thinking Like a Fan. Start Thinking Like a Business.

Here’s the honest truth most creators don’t want to say.

A lot of creators get taken advantage of.

Not because brands are evil.

But because creators approach brand deals like fans instead of business owners.

And brands can tell the difference immediately.

What thinking like a fan actually looks like

For example:

  • Responding with “oh my gosh I love you guys so much”
  • Agreeing before asking any questions
  • Feeling grateful just to be chosen
  • Doing extra work that was never discussed
  • Avoiding follow-ups because you don’t want to seem difficult

As a result, you lose control of the deal before it even starts.

What thinking like a business actually looks like

Instead, this is what professionals do:

  • Respond clearly and professionally
  • Ask about deliverables, timeline, and compensation
  • Evaluate offers based on business value
  • Hold your rate when it’s backed by real data
  • Follow up on payments calmly and consistently

Because of that, you control the relationship.

The reframe that changes everything

When a brand reaches out, they are not doing you a favor.

Instead, they are trying to solve a problem.

They need:

  • content
  • reach
  • trust with your audience

And you provide all three.

So they don’t just want you.

They need you.

In many cases, they need you just as much as you want to work with them.

How to practice this in real conversations

Before you reply to any brand, pause.

Then ask yourself:

👉 If I were a marketing agency, how would I respond?

A real agency would:

  • ask about scope
  • ask about timeline
  • ask about budget
  • send a structured response

They would not say yes immediately just because they’re excited.

And neither should you.

Your one action from this post

Write this down and keep it visible:

I am a business providing a valuable service.
My time, creativity, and audience are worth real compensation.
I approach every brand relationship professionally and from a position of equal value.

Read it before every brand conversation.
